Diet, weight control, and increased physical activity are the first steps in the prevention and treatment of coronary artery disease. Frequency, intensity, and time are what are needed to help you achieve your fitness goals. (we use the acronym FIT).
It is recommended that for overall cardiovascular health you need move your body 30 minutes a day 5 days per week (20,000 to 30,000 steps per week). *
For weight loss, it is recommended that you move your body 60 minutes a day at 5 days per week (40,000 to 60,000 steps per week)*
*Steps per week do not include usual daily activities like walking to the kitchen, bathroom, or going to bed.
It is important to understand that, if you are an inactive individual, incorporating lifestyle activities into your daily routine counts. These things could include stair climbing, gardening, housework, and walking.
The bottom line- You HAVE to move your body! Exercise is essential to maintain balance, bone health, brain health, muscle health, mental health, and overall cardiac health. If you have any cardiac risk factors such as hypertension, obesity, high cholesterol, smoking, and/or diabetes, it is reasonable to suggest that you get a cardiac assessment before embarking on any strenuous exercise program.
For beginners who have not been in a regular exercise routine, start off slowly. For instance, start off taking a comfortable walk. Go until you are too tired to go anymore (you are huffing and puffing) The next time, try to push yourself to go a bit longer. Do that each time. You need to view it as an ongoing process of behavioral change. DO NOT go out and think you are going to conquer the world and achieve your goals by enrolling in a boot camp! You can cause more harm than good. Be patient with yourself. It should get easier.
If you are unsure of what to do or you are thinking of joining a gym, I highly recommend contacting a personal trainer so that you can be properly guided to avoid injury and learn what you need to do and how to achieve your personal goals.
